What is a 'Thunderbird' (The bird)?

My high school mascot is a 'Thunderbird' and I've never been quite sure what it actually is, my gym teacher once explained to me that it was a giant bird of some sort, and I've heard that it is likened to an eagle or hawk, but what is it really?
