How does John McCain's identity as a "maverick" help him with conservative, tea party voters?

I saw Sarah Palin today rave about him being a maverick while trying to help him win his primary battle. Does she know he is reffered to as a maverick because he would go against his party and cross the aisle? How does that help him, in this political climate, with the Republicans?
